When I’m craving a taste of home, unfortunately I can’t just head over to my mom’s house in Ohio and have some teftele. So when I want to be comforted by the tastes of my childhood, I head to places like Veselka for vareniki or the piroshki ladies in Brighton beach for some heavenly savory pastries. I think a lot of us transplants do this but even if you live in the city where you grew up, there are always those spots that just make you feel warm, fuzzy and at home - the spots that remind you of your mom’s and grandma’s and auntie’s cooking. And I’m so thankful for them.
So I wanna know, where do you go in your city for a taste of home? Bonus points if it’s in New York - I wanna try all your spots!
Ootoya in NYC is my favorite for Japanese home cooking like my mom and grandma make (they both live in California). I love their tonkatsu, salmon, and mackerel - on a bad day it's my ultimate comfort food.
NYC is my hometown and a lot of places have closed :-( so you’ll find me digging into brunch and coffee fixings at zabars ( b/w cookies, bagels and spreads, ground coffee) or Barney Greengrass
Oh Emily. Are we talking some place beyond Casa Blanca or Skyline? Then it has to be Giuseppi's for me.
